Our Ultimate Hope
創世記14章の記述のほとんどは、アブラムがロトを救出した時のことが語られています。創世記13章では、アブラムとアブラムの甥であるロトは、お互いの持ち物や使用人の数が多くなったので同じ場所に住むことが難しくなり、お互いに別の土地に住むことになったことが記されています（13：6）。
そこでアブラムは、まずロトにどこに定住するかを選択させ、アブラムが残りの方に住むことにしました（13:9）。この時、ロトがヨルダン渓谷を選んだのは、水利がよく、明らかに魅力的な土地だったからです（13:11）。
しかし、ロトにとって最も不幸だったのは、彼が住み着いた土地は、対立する王たちの戦場となったことです。さらに不幸だったのは、ロトが住み着いた土地の支配者である王が敗者であったことです（14:1-7)。
その結果、ロトは使用人と財産のすべてを奪われて侵略軍に連れ去られてしまいました（14:12）。しかし幸いに、アブラムは敵を追いかけて倒し、ロトを救出したのです（14:16）。
では、より魅力的な土地を選んだロトは、何か悪いことをしたのでしょうか。ロトは、より良い土地を選び、劣る土地を叔父のアブラムに任せたことで罰を受けたのでしょうか。
答えは「いいえ」です。なぜなら、聖書はこのことについて何も教えていないからです。しかし、このことから学べることは、人生の予測不可能性です。ほとんどの場合、私たちは人生の道を自分で自由に選ぶことができます。配偶者、学校、キャリア、車、服など、最も魅力的なものを選ぶ自由があるのです。
ロトのように、多くの財産を積み上げて大成功する人もいます。ハワイに住む現代のロトは、多くの従業員を抱えるビジネスで成功し、大きな家を持っている人のようです。しかし、ある日、COVID-19が直撃し、その人はすべてを失ってしまいました。人生にはいろいろなことが起こりますが、その多くは予測不可能で、自分ではどうしようもないことです。
しかし、幸いなことに、ロトにはアブラムが来て救ってくれました。
私たちにも贖い主がおり、その名はイエス・キリストです。イエスがいなければ、私たちはロトよりもずっと悪い状態になっていたことでしょう。イエスがいなければ、私たちは永遠に霊的に死んだ状態にあり、永遠に罪の中に迷い込むことになります。イエスがいなければ、私たちの未来は、永遠の呪いと後悔の中にあります。 しかし、イエスによって、私たちは神との永遠の未来を約束されました。「神は彼らの目から涙をことごとくぬぐい取ってくださる。もはや死はなく、悲しみも、叫び声も、苦しみもない。以前のものが過ぎ去ったからである。」（黙示録 21:4,）
すべてが終わったとき、私たちの唯一の希望は、キリスト・イエスにあります。 父なる神さま、本日の御言葉をありがとうございます。人生の予測不可能性を教えてくださり、ありがとうございます。賢明な選択は常にイエスさまを選ぶことであることを教えてくださりありがとうございます。 父なる神さま、私たちを愛してくださり、私たちのためにイエスさまを地上に送り、十字架で死なせてくださったことを感謝します。救いとあなたとの永遠の人生をありがとうございます。 父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。私たちはあなたを愛しています、お父さん。In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen! Genesis 14 mostly narrates the account of Abram rescuing Lot. In Genesis 13, Abram and Lot, Abram’s nephew, decided to separate from each other because their possessions and people became too large to occupy the same place (Genesis 13:6). Therefore, Abram gave Lot a choice as to where he should settle, and Abram would occupy the other (Genesis 13:9). So, Lot selected the Jordan valley because it was well watered and obviously more attractive (Genesis 13:11). But most unfortunate for Lot, the land that he settled in became a battleground for feuding kings (Genesis 14:1-7). Even more unfortunate was the fact that the ruling king where Lot settled was the defeated party (v.7). As a result, Lot, along with all his people and possessions, was carried away by the invading army (v.12). Fortunately, Abram rescued Lot by pursuing and defeating his captors (v.16). So, did Lot do anything wrong for choosing the more attractive land? Did Lot get punished for choosing the better land and leaving the less attractive choice to his uncle Abram? The answer should be “No” because the Bible does not teach anything about this. What we can learn from this, however, is the unpredictability of life. For the most part, we are free to choose our own paths in life. We are free to choose the most attractive spouses, schools, careers, cars, and clothes. Like Lot, some of us can become very successful by accumulating many possessions. A modern-day Lot in Hawaii would be someone who had a successful business with many employees and a big house in Kahala. But one day, COVID-19 hits, and this person loses everything. Things happen in life, many of them unforeseeable and beyond our control. Fortunately, Lot had Abram to come and rescue him. We, too, have a redeemer; and His name is Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, we would be in a much worse state than Lot. Without Jesus, we would be forever in a spiritually dead state and forever lost in our sins. Without Jesus, our only future would lie in eternal damnation and regret, an eternal future with no hope of ever being reconciled with God. But through Jesus, we are promised an eternal future with God, where “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4 ESV). When all is said and done, our only hope lies in Christ Jesus. Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. Thank You for showing us today the unpredictability of life. Thank You for showing us that wise choice is always to choose Jesus. Thank You, Father, for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to earth to die for us on the Cross. Thank you for Salvation and a life ever after with You. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, amen!
