“Father, Please Help Us to Not Do Evil!”
ゼカリヤ書1章は、簡単な序文から始まります。この序文によって、預言者ゼカリヤが預言をしたのはダレイオス王の治世の第2年目であることが分かります。ダレイオスはペルシャの王ですから、ゼカリヤはペルシャに亡命したユダヤ人ディアスポラ（離散の民）の中に住んでいた預言者であったことがわかります。そして、ゼカリヤは神の民に神のことばを宣言します。
「主はあなたがたの先祖に激しく怒った。あなたは人々に言え。『万軍の主はこう言われる。わたしに帰れ。──万軍の主のことば──そうすれば、わたしもあなたがたに帰る。──万軍の主は言われる。』あなたがたの先祖のようであってはならない。先の預言者たちは彼らに叫んで言った。『万軍の主はこう言われる。あなたがたは悪の道と悪しきわざから立ち返れ。』しかし、彼らはわたしに聞かず、わたしに耳を傾けもしなかった。──主のことば──あなたがたの先祖たちは、今どこにいるのか。預言者たちは永遠に生きるだろうか。しかし、わたしのしもべである預言者たちにわたしが命じた、わたしのことばと掟は、あなたがたの先祖に追い迫ったではないか。それで彼らは立ち返って言ったのだ。『万軍の主は、私たちの生き方と行いに応じて、 私たちにしようと考えたことをそのとおりになさった』と。」（ゼカリヤ書1章2～6節、新改訳2017）。
問題は、歴史が繰り返されていることです。彼らの父祖と同じように、現在の追放されたイスラエルの民もまた神から離れたままです。神は、その離れた人々に神のもとに立ち返るように呼びかけているのです（3節）。
さらに読み進めると、人々は物理的に神から離れているのではなく、霊的に離れていることがわかります。神はどこにでもいらっしゃるので、私たちは神から逃げたくても逃れられないのです。詩篇139篇で、ダビデはこの現実を叫んでいます。
「私はどこへ行けるでしょう。あなたの御霊から離れて。どこへ逃れられるでしょう。あなたの御前を離れて。」（詩篇139篇7節,新改訳2017）。
しかし、ゼカリヤ1章4節から6節は、人が自分の道を歩むことによって、神から距離を置くことを選択できることを明らかにしています。ここで神は、自分の悪い道や行いを捨てて神のもとに立ち返るようにと民に懇願しています。
残念ながら、人は自分の誤った道から学ぶことはなく、歴史は繰り返され続けています。私たちの多くは、自分が不正の犠牲者であると考え続けていますが、実は、不正の根本的な原因は、私たちの腐敗した道にあるのです。
聖書には、神の知恵が隅から隅まで詰まっています。その多くのページには、人々がいかに罪を犯し続け、神から遠ざかっていくかという物語がたくさん書かれています。しかし、聖書には、神がいかに真実に人々を愛し、決して見捨てず諦めないということが書かれています。
聖書を通して、この永遠の問題に対する解決策は非常に明確にされています。
「万軍の主はこう宣言される。私のもとに帰れ」（3節）。
私たちは、神が悪と宣言された自分のやり方を捨て（4節）、神のやり方で物事を行うようにならなければなりません。イエスは、このことを明確に宣言しています。
「わたしに味方しない者はわたしに敵対し、わたしとともに集めない者は散らしているのです。」（マタイ12：30、新改訳2017）。マタイ12:30）。
複数の聖句が、私たちのすべての問題に対する解決策を明確に示しているのです。にもかかわらず、私たちは自分のやり方で物事を見、実行し続けます。私たちの多くは、祈りもせず、神の御言葉も読まず、自分をクリスチャンだと思っています。このような人たちに尋ねたい。もしあなたが求める唯一の助言が自分自身であるなら、どうして神の御心が何であるかを知ることができるでしょうか？
もし私たちが祈りと聖書を通して積極的に神の御心を求めなければ、私たちは道を踏み外すでしょう。もし私たちが祈らず、御言葉を黙想しないなら、どうして私たちがイエスと共にいるかどうかがわかるでしょうか。もし私たちが祈らず、御言葉を黙想しないなら、神の御心を知ることは不可能なのです。もし、私たちがイエスさまの御心に従って行動しないなら、私たちはイエスさまに逆らっていることになります。もし私たちがイエスさまに逆らって行動するならば、教会は散り散りになってしまいます。これは「悪」です！
イエスは、「わたしは心が柔和でへりくだっているから、あなたがたもわたしのくびきを負って、わたしから学びなさい。そうすれば、たましいに安らぎを得ます。わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからです。」（マタイ11：29-30, 新改訳2017）。
私たちの中で、本当にそうだと言い切れる人は何人いるでしょうか。すべてのクリスチャンは、イエスのくびきを自分で受けていると信じていることでしょう。しかし、私たちは、イエスに導いてもらうのではなく、自分の理解に従って自分の人生を導いていることがどれほど多いことでしょうか。
私たちはこの世界で生き、呼吸し、生まれてくるのですから、それは簡単なことではありません。イエス・キリストの代理人として、私たちは、優しく、心を低くし、出会うすべての魂に安らぎを与えているのでしょうか。それどころか、多くの人は、自分が他の人よりもどれだけ「クリスチャン」であるか、あるいはそうでないかを考え、互いに比較して歩いています。
また、聖書を何節暗記できたかを自慢し、その聖句が自分の内面をどの程度変えてくれるかを気にしない人も多くいます。しかし、それは聖書を読んでいればの話であり、読んでいない人もいます。聖句を暗記すると、イエスさまの柔和さとは対照的に、傲慢さが反映され、逆効果になることが多いのです。
もし私たちが自分自身を振り返るなら、教会での努力が神のためであると正直に言えるでしょうか？ イエスの前で、私たちはこの世のものではなく、イエスの代理者であると自信を持って宣言できるでしょうか？
さらに重要なことは、私たちの言葉や行動は、人々をイエスのもとに連れて行くのか、それともイエスから遠ざけてしまうのか、ということです。自分の人生を振り返ってみると、行われているのは私たちの意志なのか、それともイエスの御心なのか？
罪深い人間である私は、毎日みことばを読み、みこころに従おうと思っていますが、みこころが何であるかを正確に知ることは、必ずしも容易ではありません。わからないことも多々あります。しかし、もし私の言動が優しくなく、卑しい心で、周りの人を慰めるものでないなら、私は自分自身を真剣に反省しなければならないことは確かです。
しかし、イエスの弟子たちは、この壊れた世界とは全く違う生き方をしています。この壊れた世界を変えたいのであれば、私たちから始める必要があります。一人ずつ、この世のやり方を捨て、御言葉を通して啓示された神の御心に委ねるのです。
父なる神さま、今日の御言葉に感謝します。あなたは今まで存在したすべてのものの創造主であり、すべての真理の著者です。私たちは皆、罪人であるため、自分のやり方、間違ったやり方で物事を進め続けています。私たちの父祖は悪を行い、私たちは頑なにその腐敗した足跡を追い続けています。私たちは、自分のやり方があなたのやり方より優れていると主張し続けるのです。
父なる神さま、私たちを決して見捨てないでいてくださることを感謝します。私たちがまだ罪人であったときに、御子イエスを送って私たちの罪のために死なせてくださったことを感謝します。
父なる神さま、私たちを繰り返し自分自身から救ってくださりありがとうございます。どうか、父なる神さま、あなたの聖霊が私たちの中で御心を実現させ、私たちをあなたのように変えてくださいますように。
どうか私たちに謙虚で優しい心を与えてください。どうか私たちが他の人々の人生の中で祝福されるように使ってください。私たちを見るとき、世界の人々があなたを見るようにしてください。
父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。私たちはあなたを愛しています、お父さん。In Jesus’ Name, we pray, amen!
Zechariah 1 starts with a brief introduction. This introduction reveals that we are reading prophesies that God gave to the prophet Zechariah beginning in the second year of King Darius’s reign. Because Darius was the King of Persia, we know that Zechariah was a prophet who lived among the exiled Jewish diaspora in Persia. Zechariah then declares God’s Word to His people: “The Lord was very angry with your fathers. Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, ‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for our ways and deeds, so has he dealt with us’” (Zechariah 1:2-6, ESV). The problem is that history is repeating itself. Just like their fathers before them, the present population of exiled Israelites remains to be away from God. We know that the people are away from God because God calls them to return to Him (v.3). Reading further, we find that the people are not away from God physically but spiritually. Because God is everywhere, we cannot escape Him even if we want to. In Psalm 139, David cried out this reality: “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence” (Psalm 139:7)? Zechariah 1:4-6, however, reveals that people can choose to distance themselves from God by following their own ways. Here, God pleads to His people to return to Him by giving up their evil ways and deeds.
Unfortunately, people never learn from their misguided ways, and history continues to repeat itself. Many of us continue to see ourselves as victims of injustice when, in fact, the root cause of all the injustice we see is our corrupt ways. The Bible is filled, cover to cover, with God’s wisdom. Throughout its many pages, we read many stories of how people continue to sin and distance themselves from God. Throughout the Bible, we also read about how God faithfully loved His people by never leaving them or giving up. Throughout the Bible, the solution to this timeless problem is made very clear: “Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me” (v.3). We must give up our own ways, which God declares as evil (v.4), and begin to do things His way. Jesus makes this very clear by declaring: “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters” (Matthew 12:30, ESV). Multiple verses of Scripture make the solution to all of our problems very clear. Despite all this, we continue to see and do things our way. Many of us do not pray nor read God’s Word and consider ourselves Christian. I would ask these people: How do you know what is God’s will if the only counsel you seek is yourself? If We do not actively seek God’s will through prayer and Scripture, we will go astray. How do we know whether or not we are with Jesus if we do not pray and meditate on His Word? If we do not pray and meditate on the Word, there is no possible way that we can know God’s will. If we do not operate in Jesus’ will, we are against Him. If we operate against Him, the Church will scatter. This is Evil!
Jesus declared, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30). How many of us can truly claim that we do this? I’m sure that all Christians believe that they take Jesus’ yoke upon themselves. However, how often do we find ourselves leading our lives according to our own understanding instead of allowing Jesus to lead us? Because we live, breathe, and are born in this world, it is not easy. As representatives of Jesus Christ here on earth, do we find ourselves being gentle, lowly in heart, and giving rest to all the souls we meet? On the contrary, many of us walk around comparing ourselves with each other, thinking how much more or less “Christian” we are than others. Many of us pride ourselves on how many verses of Scripture we can memorize without regard to the extent to which those verses transform us on the inside. That is, however, if we read the Bible at all as some of us don’t. Memorizing Scripture often has the opposite effect on people as they often reflect arrogance as opposed to Jesus’ meekness. If we reflect upon ourselves, can we honestly say that our efforts in the world, even at church, are for God? Can we declare with confidence, in the presence of Jesus, that we are the representatives of Him, and not of the world? More importantly, do our words and actions bring people to Jesus or keep them away from Him? If we look back at our lives, is it our will that is being done or His? Being a sinful human, I must confess that although I read God’s Word daily and always intend to follow His will, it is not always easy to know exactly what His will is. On many occasions, l simply do not know. But I can be sure that if my words and actions are not gentle, lowly in heart, and comforting to those around me, I must seriously reflect upon myself. The world has its ways of doing things, which are evil, but the disciples of Jesus live lives that are dramatically different from this broken world. If we want this broken world to change, it needs to start with you and me: one person at a time, by giving up our worldly ways and surrendering to God’s will, as revealed through His Word.
Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. You are the Creator of everything that ever existed and the author of all truth. Because we are all sinners, we continue to keep on doing things our way, the wrong way. Our fathers did evil, and we stubbornly continue to follow in their corrupt footsteps. We keep on insisting that our ways are better than Yours. Thank You, Father, for never giving up on us. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to die for our sins while we were still sinners. Thank You, Father, for repeatedly saving us from ourselves. Please, Father, have Your Holy Spirit have His will done in us and transform us to be more like You. Please give us a humble and gentle spirit. Please use us to be a blessing in the lives of others. Let the world see You when they see us. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, amen!
