エレミヤ書44章　

『The Fruit of Idolatry is Death』

　エレミヤ書44章は、ユダがバビロン帝国のネブカドネザル王の手に最初に落ちた後、エジプトに逃れたユダヤ人の集団について述べています。

　エレミヤ書43章では、このユダヤ人たちは、神に背くことによってエジプトに逃れたことが書かれています。エレミヤ書44章の大部分は、この住民に対する長く詳細な裁きの預言です。

　神は、ユダヤ人に何度も警告しましたが、彼らは、その警告を聞きませんでした（4-5節）。エジプトでは、ユダヤ人たちは偽りの神々を崇拝し、彼らに誓いを立てることによって、より深く罪に陥っていきました（15～25節）。

　ここで神が指摘されたのは、この偶像崇拝が偶然に起こったのではなく、その家の霊的な長であるはずの人間（19節）が十分承知していたことだということです。神の再三の警告にもかかわらず、このユダヤ人たちは故意に神に背き、偶像に誓いを立てることによってその背きを認識していたのです。

　結局、神は彼らにこう言われました。罪を犯したいのなら、罪を犯し続けなさい。あなたはもはや、わたしの名を呼ぶことができなくなる。そして、ユダヤ人たちは、自分たちの頑なな不従順によって、自分たちに裁きをもたらした。最後に残るのは神の言葉だけである（28節）と。

　この旧約聖書の裁きの預言を、クリスチャンはどのように理解したらよいのでしょうか。その第一歩は、イエス・キリストとその福音に目を向けることです。

　イエス・キリストに信仰を置いたすべての人は、もはやエレミヤ44章に書かれているような恐ろしい裁きに直面することはありません。さらに、エジプトにいたユダヤ人とは異なり、神が私たちの呼びかけに応えてくださらないという状況に陥ることは決してありません。

　イエス・キリストは、聖霊を通して、決して私たちから離れることはありません（マタイ28:20）。神は私たち（信者）から決して離れないと約束し、イエスがすでに十字架上で私たちの罪の代価を払ってくださったので、私たちは恐ろしい裁きを受けることはないのです。

　では、なぜ私たちはエレミヤ書を読み続ける必要があるのでしょうか？　神は私たちから離れることはなく、私たちはもはや恐ろしい裁きに直面することはありませんが、私たちにはエジプトにいたユダヤ人と共通する点が一つあります。

　私たちは皆、罪を犯し続けているのです。私たちは皆、罪を犯し続け、この地上で偶像を礼拝し続けているのです。私たちの中に住んでいる聖霊によって、私たちはその偶像が何であるかを正確に知っています。私たちは、その偶像を捨て去ることができず、神に背き続けているのです。私たちは皆、死に値する罪があるのです。しかし、イエスは私たちに代わって罪の代価を支払うために来られたのです。私たちは自分の意志ではなく、イエスとその罪なきお方の血のおかげで、神の御前に罪のない者として立つことができるのです。

　父なる神さま

　今日の御言葉を感謝します。あなた、あなただけが神であり、私たちの賛美に値します。あなた、あなただけが聖なる方です。あなた、あなただけが、義の創造者です。

　エレミヤ書44章を通して、私たちが受けるべき裁きを示してくださったことを感謝します。私たちの偶像、不従順、独善のゆえに、私たちは皆、死に値するのです。私たちが罪から立ち直れないために、私たちは皆、かつて恐ろしい裁きに直面したのです。

　父なる神さま、私たちの罪を償い、あなたと和解させるために御子イエスさまを私たちのもとに遣わしてくださったことを感謝します。

　私たちを愛してくださり、決して見捨てることなく、私たちにふさわしくない永遠の命を与えてくださったことを感謝します。父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。私たちはあなたを愛しています、父なる神さま。In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.

Jeremiah 44 addresses a population of Jews who fled to Egypt after the first fall of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar of the Babylon empire. In Jeremiah 43, we read that these Jews in Egypt fled there by disobeying God. Jeremiah 44 is, for the most part, a long detailed prophecy of judgment against this population. God declared that he persistently warned the Jews but they did not listen (v.4-5). In Egypt, the Jews fell deeper into sin by worshipping false gods and making vows to them (v.15-25). What God pointed out here is that this idol worship did not happen by accident, but with the full knowledge of the men (v.19) who were supposed to be the spiritual heads of their households. Despite God’s repeated warnings, these Jews knowingly disobeyed God and confirmed their disobedience by making vows. What ultimately ends up happening is that God tells them: If you want to sin, go on sinning; you will no longer be able to call on My name. And by their own stubborn disobedience, the Jews brought judgment upon themselves. In the end, only God’s Word remains (v.28).

How can Christians make any sense out of this Old Testament prophecy of judgment? The first step is to look to Jesus Christ and His gospel. All who placed their faith in Jesus Christ will no longer face the terrible judgment that Jeremiah 44 describes. Furthermore, unlike the Jews in Egypt, we will never be in a situation where God no longer hears us calling upon Him. Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, will never leave us (Matthew 28:20). God promises to never leave us (believers) and we do not face a terrible judgment because Jesus already paid the price for our transgressions on the Cross. So why do we need to continue reading Jeremiah? Although God will never leave us and we no longer face a terrible judgment, we do have one thing in common with the Jews in Egypt: We all continue to sin. We all continue to worship our idols here on earth. Through the Holy Spirit that lives in all of us, we all know exactly what those idols are. We continue to disobey God by failing to leave those idols behind. Although we do not face the same faith as the Jews in Egypt, we must all not forget that it is the same faith as those Jews that we all deserve for our disobedience. We all deserve death. Although we did not deserve it, Jesus came to pay the price for our sins on our behalf. We stand blameless before God not on our own accord, but because of Jesus and His innocent blood.

Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. You, and You alone are God and worthy of our praise. You, and You alone are holy. You, and You alone are the author of righteousness. Thank you You for showing us through Jeremiah 44 the judgment that we deserved. Because of our idols, disobedience, and self-righteousness, we all deserve death. Because of our inability to turn from our sin, we all once faced a terrible judgment. Thank You, Father, for sending Your Son Jesus to us to pay for our sins and reconcile us with You. Thank you for loving us so much that you never gave up on us and gifted us with an eternal life that we did not deserve. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.
