“Father, Let Your Will be Done!”
エゼキエル書35章は、創世記25章から始まった出来事の悲劇的な結末である。神はイサクの妻リベカに宣言された。「すると主は彼女に言われた。「二つの国があなたの胎内にあり、二つの国民があなたから分かれ出る。一つの国民は、もう一つの国民より強く、兄が弟に仕える。」（創世記25：23, 新改訳2017）。
ご存知のように、リベカの胎内にいた二人の赤ん坊はヤコブとエサウであった。しかし、多くの人が知らないのは、ヤコブの血統はやがてイスラエルの国へとつながるが、エサウの子孫もエジプトとカナンの間のセイルの丘陵地帯にエドムという国を形成していたことである（創世記36:8-9）。エサウは長子であったが、神はリベカに、エサウの子孫は国を形成し、イスラエルの国となった弟ヤコブに仕えることになると宣言された（創世記35:10）。
エサウは創世記25章の最後で、ヤコブに長子の権利を売っている。さらに、ヤコブとリベカは創世記27章後半で、長子としての祝福を受けるためにイサクと共謀している。創世記33章でヤコブはエサウと和解したように見えたが、その後の出来事から、エドムという国がイスラエルに恨みを持ち続けていることがわかる。
民数記20章14節から21節では、エドムの王はモーセに率いられたイスラエルの民が彼らの王国を通過することを拒否している。ダビデ王もエドムを戦いで破り、自分の王国に服従させた（第2サムエル8:12-14）。
エドムは、イスラエルに対する恨みと憎しみのために、イスラエルが最も弱っていた時にバビロンに協力した（エゼキエル35:5）。エドムの動機は、主がそこにおられることを知っていながら、ユダとイスラエルの国々を自分たちのものとすることでもあったようだ（エゼキエル35:10）。
エドムの国は、イスラエルとユダを陥落させるために、バビロンに協力して神に逆らい、その領土を自分たちのものにし、長年の恨みを晴らそうとしたのである。しかし、神はエドムを荒れ地にして、その民が主なる神を知るようにすると宣言されたのである（エゼキエル35:9、12）。
ここには多くのテーマがある。その中で、マイナーなテーマの一つは、復讐のテーマだ。神は宣言された。「彼らのわざわいの日は近く、来たるべき時が速やかに来る。」（申命記32:35, 新改訳2017）。
使徒はこのことを再確認し、こう宣言した。「愛する者たち、自分で復讐してはいけません。神の怒りにゆだねなさい。こう書かれているからです。「復讐はわたしのもの。わたしが報復する。」(ローマ人への手紙 12:19,新改訳2017) 。
私たち、クリスチャンは決して他人に復讐してはならず、それらのことは主に委ねるのだ。
さらに、もっと大きな包括的なテーマは、神に逆らってはいけないということである。エドム人は、バビロン人を助けたとき、神に逆らうことになると知っていた（エゼキエル35:10）。年上のエサウが油断のならない弟ヤコブに仕えることは不公平に思えたかもしれないが、これは神のみこころであった。
しかし、この油断ならない弟は、イエス・キリストの系図にも含まれている（マタイ1:2）。イエス・キリストの系図は、様々な罪を犯した多くの欠けのある人々で満ちている（マタイ1:1-17）。
神は教会の目的のために多くの欠けのある人々を使い続けておられる。私たちは皆、多くの異なる背景を持ち、多くの異なる言語を話すが、一つの御霊によって結ばれ、一つの希望に召されたキリストの一つの体は、今日この地上で私たちの主イエス・キリストを現わし続けているのだ。
父なる神さま、今日の御言葉をありがとうございます。あなた、あなただけが神です。“主の祈り”で祈るように、あなたの御国が来て、あなたの御心が天にあるように地上になされるようにしてください。
天にあるように、私たちの人生にもあなたの御心がなされるようにしてください。私たちがある人々に対して、あなたの御心ではないことを知りながら抱いている悪感情を、あなたの平安で覆ってください。
父なる神さま、私たちが嫌いな人たちをも祝福してください。もし彼らがあなたを知らないなら、彼らがあなたを知り、あなたが主であることを知ることができるように、彼らの人生にあなたの聖霊が働いてくださるようにお願いします。
しかし、最終的にはあなたの御心が成されますように。父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。父なる神さま、私たちはあなたを愛しています。In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen!
Ezekiel 35 is the tragic conclusion of events that started from Genesis 25. God declared to Rebekah, Isaac’s wife: “And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger””(Genesis 25:23 ESV). As we know, the two babies in Rebekah’s womb were Jacob and Esau. What many of us do not realize, however, is that although Jacob’s lineage eventually led to the nation of Israel, Esau’s descendants also formed a nation called Edom in the hill country of Seir between Egypt and Canaan (Genesis 36:8-9. Although Esau was the firstborn, God declared to Rebekah that the descendants of Esau would form a nation, and they would be serving his younger brother Jacob, who became the nation of Israel (Genesis 35:10). Esau sold his birthright to Jacob in the last part of Genesis 25. Furthermore, Jacob and Rebekah conspired against Isaac to receive his blessings as the firstborn in the second half of Genesis 27. Although Jacob appeared to have made peace with Esau in Genesis 33, later events suggest that the nation of Edom continued to hold a grudge against Israel. In Numbers 20:14-21, the king of Edom refused to allow the Israelites led by Moses to pass through their kingdom. King David also made Edom subject to his kingdom when he defeated them in battle (2 Samuel 8:12-14). Because of its grudge and hatred toward Israel, Edom assisted the Babylonians when Israel was at its weakest (Ezekiel 35:5). Apparently, Edom’s motive was also to claim the nations of Judah and Israel as their own even though they knew that the Lord was there (Ezekiel 35:10). The nation of Edom knowingly went against God by assisting the Babylonians in the fall of Israel and Judah with the goal of making those territories their own possession as well as satisfying their longtime grudge. But God declared that He would make Edom a baron wasteland so that its people will know that He is the Lord (Ezekiel 35:9, 12).
There are many themes here. One of the minor themes deals with the topic of vengeance. God declared: “Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly” (Deuteronomy 32:35). The Apostle reaffirmed this when he declared: “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord” (Romans 12:19). Christians must never take revenge against others but leave those things up to the Lord. The larger overarching theme is to not go against God. The Edomites knew that they were going against God when they assisted the Babylonians (Ezekiel 35:10). Although it may have seemed unfair for the older Esau to serve his trick little brother Jacob, this was God’s will. However, this tricky little brother is also part of Jesus Christ’s genealogy (Matthew 1:2). Jesus Christ’s genealogy is full of many flawed people who committed a wide array of sins (Matthew 1:1-17). God continues to use many flawed individuals to serve his purposes in the Church. Although we all come from many different backgrounds and speak many different languages, the One body of Christ, united by One Spirit, called to one hope, continues to represent our Lord Jesus Christ here on earth today.
Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. You and You alone are God. As we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, let Your kingdom come and let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Let Your will be done in our lives as it is in heaven. Please cover us with your peace to cover the ill feelings that we have toward some people as we know that this is not Your will. Father, please bless the people that we do not like also. If they do not know You, we ask that Your Holy Spirit work in their lives so that they can come to know You also, and know that You are Lord. But ultimately, let Your will be done. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, amen.
