箴言24章
“Living with Biblical Integrity”
箴言24章では、短い箴言の朗読が続けられています。箴言のグループ分けにはパターンやテーマがありますが、それぞれを独立した知恵の言葉として読むこともできます。先週と同様に、限られたスペースで34節すべてを読むことはできませんので、聖書的な誠実さをもって生きるための3つの側面について教えている3つの格言に焦点を当てたいと思います。
26節にこうあります。「率直な答えをする者は、その唇に口づけされる。」（新改訳2017）。
一見したところ、聖書に詳しい読者の多くはこう言うでしょう。「もちろん、あなたは常に正直でなければならず、真実を話さなければなりません。」
しかし、この聖句はもっと深いことを意味しています。この聖句は、正直に答えてくれた人への対応を唇へのキスにたとえているのです。聖書の学者たちは、聖書の時代にはキスは忠誠と愛情を伝える方法だったと説明しています。
つまり、この聖句が教えているのは、こういうことです。誰かが私たちに何かを尋ねたとき、真の忠実な友人は正直に答えるでしょう。私たちが知っているように、これは口で言うほど簡単なことではありません。キリストの体においても、私たちを取り巻く世界と同じように、私たちはしばしば分裂を引き起こす可能性のある状況に置かれます。私たちの堕落した状態のために、クリスチャンはノンクリスチャンが経験するのと同じ問題を経験するのです。クリスチャンとノンクリスチャンの違いは、その問題にどのように対処するかということです。あらゆる種類の問題の共通の原因は、ゴシップや不必要なおしゃべりです。
ですから、今度、仲間のクリスチャンが、他の仲間のクリスチャンについて、心ないことを言ったり、事実でないことを言ったりするようになったら、自分自身とその状況を振り返ってみる必要があるのです。私たちは、ゴシップを広めることによって分裂を引き起こし、キリストの体に害を及ぼしたいのでしょうか？ それとも、仲間のクリスチャンに正直になるべきでしょうか？ 私たちは正直に、彼らが広めている不必要なゴシップが、私たち全員が仕えている主を悲しませる原因になっているという真実を伝えるべきでしょうか？
キリストの体として、あるメンバーが他のメンバーに害を与えるとき、それは私たち自身を傷つけていることになるのです。私たちに害を与え、分裂させようとするのはサタンであることを忘れないでください。嘘やゴシップは、非常に効果的なので、サタンのお気に入りの武器の一つです。しかし、私たちのうちに住んでおられる聖霊の助けによって、私たちはそれらの嘘やゴシップを広めないことによって、これらの攻撃を阻止する力を持っています。
28節にはこうあります。「あなたは、あなたの隣人に対し、根拠を持たない証人となってはならない。あなたのその唇で惑わそうとするのか。」
残念ながら、この議論では、次のような議論が解決されることはないでしょう。「私の隣人とは誰なのか? 」
しかし、この箴言は、私たちの身近にいる人、あるいは私たちと多くの交流がある人を思い起こさせるものです。私たちの多くは、おせっかいな隣人との付き合いがどのようなものかを知っています。裏を返せば、私たちの多くは自分自身がおせっかいな隣人であり、それに気づいていないだけなのです。
隣人には他の人には見えないものが見えるという利点があります。私たちは、隣人がその家庭環境でどのように過ごしているか、短い時間ですが体験することができます。しかし、残念ながら、その一瞬の光景は、家族喧嘩や自分とは異なる習慣など、私たちが不快に感じるものであることが多いのです。
親しい友人も同様です。人と人が親しくなるにつれて、私たちはガードを緩めて、本当の自分をさらけ出すようになります。しかし残念なことに、本当の自分をさらけ出すと、欠点や悪い癖、独特のやり方なども見えてきます。
この聖句が教えてくれるのは、隣人が家族を虐待しているのを目撃しない限り、私たちは自分自身のことを気にかける必要があるということです。神は個人を創られたのであって、クローンを創られたのではないのです。
29節にはこうあります。「「彼が私にしたように、私も彼にしよう。彼の行いに応じて、仕返しをしよう」と言ってはならない。」
確かに、多くの人が信じているのとは逆に、旧約聖書では復讐は教えられていないのです。
では、レビ記24章の「目には目を」についてはどうでしょうか。旧約聖書の研究者たちは、レビ記24章は司法と公共の領域における正義を扱っていると説明しています。しかし、個人的な復讐は聖書では決して推奨されていません。イエスご自身も、この件に関して語られています。
「『目には目を、歯には歯を』と言われていたのを、あなたがたは聞いています。しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言います。悪い者に手向かってはいけません。あなたの右の頬を打つ者には左の頬も向けなさい。あなたを告訴して下着を取ろうとする者には、上着も取らせなさい。あなたに一ミリオン行くように強いる者がいれば、一緒に二ミリオン行きなさい。求める者には与えなさい。借りようとする者に背を向けてはいけません。」（マタイの福音書 5:38-42、新改訳2017）。
神の言葉は時に読み手を混乱させることがありますが、神の言葉は決して矛盾することはありません。一貫したメッセージは 「復讐してはならない」です。旧約聖書における私たちの神は、新約聖書においても同じ神であり、永遠にそうであるように、今日においても同じ神なのです。
父なる神さま、今日も御言葉をありがとうございます。私たちが真実に生き続けなければならないことを、真実の主が思い出させてくださってありがとうございます。とても難しいことですが、噂話もしないように助けてください。困難な時でさえも、あなたの真実にとどまることができるように助けてください。
また、自分のことは自分でするように、自分には関係のない取るに足らないことに関わらないようにということを思い出させてくださることを感謝します。
また、旧約聖書の時代から今に至るまで、あなたの御心は変わらないことを教えてくださってありがとうございます。人々が復讐し、仕返しをすることは、決してあなたの御心ではありません。
父なる神さま、私たちに赦しの心を与えてください。私たちが今までしてきたこと、これからもしていくであろう罪深いことをしても、あなたは私たちを愛し、和解を求め続けてくださいます。
父なる神さま、私たちすべてをあなたと和解させる御子イエス・キリストを遣わしてくださったことを感謝します。父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。父なる神さま、私たちはあなたを愛しています。In Jesus Name we pray, amen.
We continue our reading of shorter proverbs in Proverbs 24. Although patterns and themes can be found in the groupings of these individual sayings, they can also be read as individual standalone words of wisdom. Just as we did last week, our limited space cannot accommodate all 34 verses, so we will focus on just three sayings that teach us about three aspects of living with biblical integrity.
Verse 26 reads: “Whoever gives an honest answer kisses the lips” (Proverbs 24:26, ESV). At first glance, most readers who are familiar with the Bible will say: “Of course, you must always be honest and tell the truth; the 10 Commandments tell us not to lie.” However, this verse goes much deeper. This verse equates an honest answer to a kiss on the lips to the person who receives our honest answers. Biblical scholars explain that a kiss in biblical times was a way to communicate loyalty and affection. So what this verse teaches is this: When someone asks us something, a true and loyal friend would answer honestly. As we all know, this is not as easy as it sounds. In the body of Christ, just as in the world around us, we often find ourselves in situations that have the potential to cause division. Because of our fallen condition, Christians experience the same problems that non-Christians experience. What separates Christians from non-Christians is how we deal with our problems. A common source of all sorts of problems is gossip and needless talk. Therefore, the next time a fellow Christian comes to us to say something unkind or something that may be untrue about another fellow Christian, we need to reflect on ourselves and the situation. Do we want to cause Christ’s body harm by causing division by spreading gossip? Or, should we be honest with our fellow Christians? Should we be honest and tell them the truth, that the unnecessary gossip that they are spreading is causing grief for the Lord that we all serve. As the body of Christ, when one member causes harm to another member, we are actually just harming ourselves. Remember, it is Satan that wants to cause us harm and divide us. Lies and Gossip are some of Satan’s favorite weapons because they are very effective. But with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, we have the power to stop these attacks by not advancing those lies and gossip.
Verse 28 reads: “Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause, and do not deceive with your lips” (Proverbs 24: 28, ESV). Unfortunately, this discussion will not solve the debate of: “who is my neighbor?” However, this Proverb does bring to mind people who are close to, or who have a lot of interaction with us. Many of us know what it is like to deal with nosy neighbors. The flip side is, many of us have been nosy neighbors ourselves and just don’t realize it. Unlike the average person, neighbors have the advantage of seeing things that others do not. We get to experience brief moments of how our neighbors are in their home environments. Unfortunately, those brief moments that call our attention are often family arguments, habits that are different from our own, and other things that we view as unpleasant things. The same goes for our close friends. As people become closer and closer with each other, we begin to lower our guards and reveal our true selves. Unfortunately, revealing our true selves also reveal our faults, bad habits, and peculiar way of doing some things. What this verse teaches us is that, unless we witness something such as a neighbor abusing a family member, we need to just mind our own business. After all, God created individuals, not clones.
Verse 29 reads: “Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done” (Proverbs 24:29, ESV). Indeed, contrary to what many people believe, even the Old Testament does not teach revenge. So what about an “eye for an eye” in Leviticus 24? Scholars of the Old Testament explain that Leviticus 24 deals with justice in the judicial/public spheres. However, personal revenge is never endorsed in the Bible. Jesus, Himself had something to say on this matter: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you” (Matthew 5:38-42, ESV). Although the Word of God can be confusing at times, the Word of God will never contradict itself. The consistent message is: “Do not seek revenge.” Our God in the Old Testament is the same God in the New Testament, and He is still the same God today, as He will be forever and ever.
Thank you, Father, for Your Word today. Thank you for reminding us that we must continue to live in truth, Your truth lord. Although it is very hard to do, help us to also not gossip. Help us, Father, to remain in Your truth, even in difficult times. Thank you also for reminding us to mind our own business and not get involved in insignificant matters that don’t concern us. Thank you also for showing us that Your will remains unchanged from the Old Testament times until now. People taking revenge and getting even has never been Your will. Just like You, Father, please give us a heart of forgiveness. After all the sinful things that we have done and continue to do, You still love us and continue to seek reconciliation. Thank You, Father, for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, who reconciled all of us with You. Thank You, Father. We love you, Father. In Jesus Name we pray, Amen.
