『Our Stubbornness and Sin verses God’s Patience and Love』
詩篇78篇は、かなり長い詩篇です。おそらくダビデの幕屋の礼拝指揮者であった音楽家の一人であるアサフの作とされています。
この詩篇の序文（1-8節）には、この詩篇の目的が書かれています。この詩篇は、イスラエルの過去の非常に暗い時代、特にモーセの後継者であるヨシュアの子孫であるエフライム族について語っています。
詩篇の作者はこう説明しています。
「それを私たちは息子たちに隠さず後の時代に語り告げよう。主の誉れを 主が行われた力ある奇しいみわざを。主はヤコブのうちにさとしを置き イスラエルのうちにみおしえを定め 私たちの先祖に命じてその子らに教えるようにされた。後の世代の者 生まれてくる子らがこれを知り さらに彼らがその子らにまた語り告げるため 彼らが神に信頼し神のみわざを忘れずその命令を守るために。先祖たちのように強情で逆らう世代 心定まらない世代 霊が神に忠実でない世代とならないために。」（4-8節）
実際、この詩篇の残りの部分は、イスラエルの罪と神の忍耐強い対応についての長い叙述となっています。9-11節では、エフライム人の罪について語られています。12-16節では、彼らを養うという神の寛容な態度を説明しています。17-20節では、エフライム人がさらに罪を犯したことが語られています。21-28節では、神が怒りながらも、忍耐強く彼らを養ってくださったことを明らかにしています。29-31節では、エフライム人が罪を犯し続けていたので、ついに神はエフライム人の最も強い者を殺されたことが書かれています。32-37節では、エフライム人が再び罪を犯し、38-39節では、神は憐れみをもって応えられ、40-58節では、再びエフライム人が罪を犯し、神がそれに応えられたことが引き続き語られています。そして、59-64節では、長い間忍耐してきたエフライム人を神が一掃したのです。65-72節では、神がどのようにしてエフライム族をダビデを羊飼いとするユダ族に変えられたかを説明しています。この詩篇はこう締めくくられています。「主は しもべダビデを選び 羊の囲いから召し出された。乳を飲ませる雌羊の番から 彼を連れて来て 御民ヤコブを ご自分のゆずりの民イスラエルを 牧するようにされた。彼は 全き心で彼らを牧し 英知の手で彼らを導いた。」（70-72節）
残念ながら、私たちはユダ族がどうなったかを知っています。しかし、彼らの地上での失敗は、物語の終わりではありません。荒野でのイスラエルの罪の記録や、この詩篇の多くを読んだとき、私はよくこう思いました。「この人たちは愚かだ、同じ罪や同じ過ちを繰り返している。」 と、自分に言い聞かせることが多かったのです。「自分は彼らのようでなくてよかった 」と。
しかし、悲しいことに、私たちは皆、彼らのような存在なのです。私もあなたも彼らと同じなのです。なぜそう言えるのでしょうか？
パウロはこう言っています。「すべての人は罪を犯し、神の栄光を受けることができません」（ローマ人への手紙3章23節）。あなたが罪を犯し、私が罪を犯し、私たちが知っている最も親切な人々でさえも罪を犯しています。
しかし、私たちは皆、罪を犯していますが、イエスは私たちが悔い改めて罪から立ち返ることを願っておられます（ヨハネ5:14-15、8:11、第2歴代誌7:14）。イエスの十字架の死によって、私たちの罪が覆われ、神との関係が回復されましたが、それでも私たちは神に喜ばれる生活をするために最善を尽くさなければなりません。
はっきり言って、神に喜ばれる生活をすれば天国に行けるわけではありません。しかし、神に喜ばれる生活をすることは、私たちの罪の罰を受けるために独り子を送ってくださったほどに私たちを愛してくださっている神への感謝の気持ちを表す手段となるはずです。「ダビデの子」（マタイ1:1、12:23、マルコ10:48）であるユダの部族から、私たちの主であり、救い主であるイエスが生まれたのです。
天の父よ、今日もあなたの御言葉をありがとうございます。私たち人間がいかに罪を犯し続ける傾向があるかを教えてくださり、ありがとうございます。私たちがいかに頑固であるかを示してくださり、ありがとうございます。あなたが私たちを祝福し、与え続けてくださっているにもかかわらず、私たちがあなたのことを忘れ続けていることを示してくださり、ありがとうございます。
私たちが罪人のままであったにもかかわらず、独り子イエスを送って私たちのために十字架で死なせてくださったほどに、私たちを愛してくださっていることを感謝します。
私たちは、いつも父なる神を忘れないようにします。私たちは、悔い改めて神に喜ばれる生活をするように努力します。私たちは、天の父を第一に考えるように努めます。私たちはあなたを愛しています。イエスの名によって、アーメン。
Psalm 78 is a rather long psalm attributed to Asaph, who was probably one of David’s worship leaders of musicians. The introduction to this psalm (vv. 1-8) explains the psalm’s purpose. This psalm talks about the very dark days in Israel’s past, in particular, the deeds of the tribe of Ephraim who were the descendants of Joshua, the successor of Moses. The psalmist explains: “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers” (vv. 4-8).
Indeed, the remainder of this psalm is a long narration of Israel’s sin and God’s patient responses. Verses 9-11 talks about the sin of the Ephraimites. Verses 12-16 explains God’s gracious response by providing for them. In verses 17-20, the Ephraimites sinned even more. Verses 21-28 reveals how God got angry, but still remained patient and provided for them. In verses 29-31, God finally killed the strongest of the Ephraimites when they continued to sin and enjoy God’s blessings. In verses 32-37, the Ephraimites responded by sinning again. In verses 38-39, God responded with compassion. Verses 40-58 continue to narrate the story of how the Ephraimites sinned and God responded. Finally in verses 59-64, God wiped out the Ephraimites after being patient with them for so long. Verses 65-72 explains how God replaced the Ephraimites with the tribe of Judah, with David as its shepherd. This psalm concludes with: “He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance. With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand” (vv. 70-72).
Unfortunately, we all know how the tribe of Judah did too. But their earthly failure is not the end of the story. When I first the accounts of Israel’s sins in the desert, and many of these psalms, I used to think to myself: “these guys are stupid, they keep on committing the same sins and same mistakes.” I often said to myself: “I’m glad that I’m not like them.” The sad truth is that we are all like them. I am just like them and so are you. How do I know this? Paul declared: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). You sin, I sin, and even the nicest people that we know sin. However, although we all sin, Jesus wants us to repent and turn away from our sin (John 5:14-15; 8:11; 2 Chronicles 7:14). Although Jesus’ death on the cross covered our sin and restored our relationship with God, we must still try our best to live godly lives. To be clear, living godly lives will not earn our way to heaven. However, living godly lives should be, among many other reasons, a way that we show our appreciation to God for loving us so much that He sent His only Son to pay the penalty for our sin. Out of the tribe of Judah, the “Son of David” (Matthew 1:1; 12:23; Mark 10:48), Jesus, our Lord and Savior was born.
Thank you, heavenly Father, for Your Word today. Thank you for showing us how we humans are prone to keep on sinning. Thank you for showing us how stubborn we are. Thank you for showing us how we keep on forgetting about You as You continue to bless and provide for us. Thank you for loving us so much that although we remained sinners, You sent your only Son Jesus to die for us on the cross. We will try our best to always remember you Father. We will try our best to repent and live godly lives Father. We will strive to put You first Father. We love you Father. In Jesus Name we pray, Amen.
