コリント人への手紙 第一 ８章
“Love for Our Others Outweighs Our Personal Freedoms”
第1コリント8章では、偶像に捧げられた肉を食べることの問題を取り上げている。当時、市場で売られていた肉のほとんどは、異教徒の神殿で異教徒の偶像のカミに捧げられた動物の肉であった。
パウロは、成熟したクリスチャンは偶像のカミなど存在しないことをよく知っているので（4節）、その肉を食べることは自由であると説明する。しかし、パウロは、成熟していないクリスチャンの前で偶像のカミに捧げられた肉を食べることは、彼らのつまずきとなり（9節）、彼らの信仰を失わせることになるかもしれないと述べている（11節）。
だから、パウロがここで説明しているのは、クリスチャンは実際には存在しない偶像のカミに捧げられた動物の肉を食べることは自由だが、その自由は慎重に行使すべきだということなのだ。
もちろん、成熟したクリスチャンは、家庭で、あるいは個人的に食べることがでる。しかし、成熟したクリスチャンは、成熟していないクリスチャンの前でこの肉を決して食べてはいけない。1コリント10章を見ると、パウロはすべてのクリスチャンが偶像に捧げられた肉に関連するすべての宗教活動に参加することを明確に禁止している。パウロは、偶像のカミは存在しないが、これらの偽りの偶像の背後にある悪魔の活動は本物であることを指摘している（1コリント10:20-22）。
さらにパウロは、犠牲となった動物の肉を自由に食べることができるという“知識”の問題に話を戻す。この肉を自由に食べることができるという知識は、しばしば人々を高慢にさせる（1節）。その高慢さのために、この知識を持たないクリスチャンの前で犠牲の肉を食べ、彼らをつまずかせる可能性があったのである。
パウロは、このような「自分はすごい知識を持っている」と思っている傲慢な人たちに対して、「彼らはまだ知るべきことを知らない」と叱責している（2節）。クリスチャンのするべきことは、すべて愛でなければならない（3節）。
さらに、直接には述べられていないが、本来“知識”は私たちを高慢にするのではなく、謙遜にするものであることが強く示唆されています。したがって、愛と謙遜のために、成熟したクリスチャンは、自分の自由を犠牲にして、成熟していないクリスチャンの育成を優先させなければならない。だから、パウロは、弱い兄弟の前では決して肉を食べないと説明している。もし、彼が良心に反して意図的にこのようなことをしたならば、それは罪となる（12節）。
日本の文化や伝統は、偶像崇拝と深く結びついている。日本人が祝うほとんどすべての伝統は、何らかの形で仏教か神道のどちらかと結びついている。わかりやすいところでは、結婚式、葬式、祝い事などがある。あまり知られていないが、盆踊り、地方祭、花祭り、七五三、元旦に神社で鐘をつくなどの行事もそうだ。私が知らないだけで、もっとたくさんあるはずだ。
もし今日、コリントの信徒への第一の手紙8章と10章を適用するならば、クリスチャンは正月の餅も、盆踊りも、縁日のアンダギー、コーンドッグも自由に食べることができるだろう。しかし、もし良心によって、これらのものを食べると、若いクリスチャンに害を及ぼす可能性があると言われたら、これらの行為を控えるべきだ。
また、小さな子どもを育てているクリスチャンは、盆踊りなどの行事に子どもを連れ行かない方がいいだろう。もちろん、これは私個人の意見だ。あなたの良心と子どもへの愛によって、行動して欲しい。
しかし、絶対に避けなければならないのは、偶像崇拝、つまり悪霊と関係のあるこれらの宗教儀式に参加することだ。クリスチャンは、お寺でお香をあげてはいけない。同様に、クリスチャンは神社で祈りを捧げたり、鐘を鳴らしたり、祝福を受けたりしてはいけない。これは明らかに偶像崇拝だからだ。私たちは、真の神だけを崇拝するのだ。
父なる神さま、本日の御言葉を感謝します。あなた、あなただけが神です。私たちはあなた以外には誰も礼拝。御子イエス‧キリストの血は私たちに大きな自由を与えてくれましたが、この自由を行使するためには、私たちは慎重でなければならないことを今日教えてくださいました。もし私たちが自由を行使することで、他の兄弟がつまずくことになるなら、あなたはこれを罪と呼ばれます。
父なる神さま、私たちが過去にこのような罪を犯したことがあれば、どうか赦してください。そして、今後このような罪を犯さないように助けてください。私たちを聖霊で満たし、導いてくださいますようお願いします。私たちの人生にあなたの御心が成されますように。父なる神様、ありがとうございます。

1 Corinthians 8 addresses the issue of eating meat sacrificed to idols. At that time, virtually all meat sold in the markets was obtained from animals that were sacrificed to pagan idols in pagan temples. Paul explains that because mature Christians are well aware that there is no such thing as idols (v.4), Christians are free to eat that meat. However, what Paul also mentions is that eating meat sacrificed to idols in the presence of less mature Christians may be a stumbling block to them (v.9) and result in the loss of their faith (v.11). Therefore, what Paul is explaining here is that although Christians are free to eat the meat of animals sacrificed to an idol that does not exist, he should exercise that freedom with caution and discretion. Of course, that mature Christian can eat it at home or in private. However, mature Christians should never eat this meat in the presence of less mature Christians. Looking forward to 1 Corinthians 10, Paul does explicitly prohibit all Christians from participating in all religious activities that are associated with meat sacrificed to idols. Paul points to the fact that although idols do not exist, demonic activity behind these false idols is real (1 Corinthians 10:20-22).
Getting back to the issue of the knowledge of the freedom to eat the meat of sacrificed animals, Paul addresses the problem of knowledge. The knowledge of being free to eat this meat often makes people prideful (v.1). Because of this pride, some Christians ate sacrificed meat in the presence of Christians without this knowledge and potentially causing them to stumble. To these arrogant people who think that they possess some great knowledge, Paul rebukes them by saying that they still do not know what they need to know (v.2). Being Christian is all about love (v.3). Furthermore, although it is not directly stated, it is strongly implied that our knowledge should make us humble, not prideful. Therefore, in all love and humility, the more mature Christians must make the nurturing of less mature Christians their priority at the expense of their freedom. Therefore, Paul explains that he will never eat meat in the presence of a weaker brother. If he intentionally did this against his conscience, it would be a sin (v.12).
Japanese culture and traditions are highly intertwined with idol worship. Almost all traditions that the Japanese people celebrate are tied in some way to either Buddhism or Shinto. The obvious ones are the wedding ceremonies, funerals, and blessings. The not-so-obvious are events such as Bon matsuri, Local matsuri, Hana Matsuri, 7-5-3, and ringing the bell at Shinto shrines on New Year’s day. There are many more that I am not aware of. If we applied 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 today, Christians would be free to eat New Year’s mochi as well as the flying saucers, andagi, and corn dogs at Bon Dances. However, if our conscience tells us that eating these things may cause harm to a younger Christian, we should abstain from these activities. I would add that Christians raising young children should not bring their children to events such as Bon Dances. But of course, this is just my opinion. Let your conscience and love for your children dictate your actions. What must absolutely be avoided, however, is any participation in any of these religious rituals that are connected to idol worship and, therefore, demons. Christians must never offer incense at temples. Similarly, Christians must never offer prayers, ring bells, or receive blessings at Shinto Shrines because this is clearly demon worship. We worship God and God alone.
Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. You and You alone are God. We worship no One else but You. Although the blood of Your Son Jesus Christ gave us great freedom, You taught us today that we must exercise discretion with this freedom. If exercising our freedom leads to another brother stumbling, You call this sin. Father, please forgive us if we sinned in this manner anytime in the past. And Father, please help us not to sin in this manner in the future. We ask You to please have our Holy Spirit fill us, lead us, and guide us. Let Your will be done in our lives. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, Amen.
