“God Always Prevails”

　創世記35章は、神がヤコブに再びベテルに上るようにと言われた場面です。創世記28章19節によれば、ベテル（神の家）とはヤコブがその地につけた名前です。

　ヤコブがベテルという名前をつけたのは、そこで夢を見たからです。その夢では、神がアブラハムとイサクに約束したこと、またダビデから主イエス・キリストに至る「王の血統」と呼ばれるものが再確認されたのです。

　しかし、創世記35章では、ヤコブの地位を確保するための次の段階が、再びベテルで行われます。この時、神はヤコブに現れ、ヤコブの名をイスラエルと改めました（創世記35:10）。ヤコブは「欺く者」という意味で、もはや彼のアイデンティティではなくなったのです。神は、母と共謀して兄から生得権と祝福を奪い取ろうとした詐欺師を、ご自身の器に造り変えることで勝利されたのです。イスラエルという名前が示すように、最終的に神の御心が成り、神は勝利したのです。

　私たちの多くは、認めたくはないけれども、現代の競争社会において、ヤコブのように、非倫理的な方法で今の地位を築いた人もいるかもしれません。ある人は学校のテストでカンニングをしたかもしれません。ある人は、競争相手が自分より有利になるような情報を隠していたかもしれません。就職活動で、自分の資格を誇張して書いた人もいるかもしれません。ある人は、今の地位を築くために、真っ赤なウソをついたり、不正な手段を用いたりしたことがあるかもしれません。

　しかし、私たちがキリストに信仰を置いたとき、私たちは新しいアイデンティティを与えられました。そうです、私たちが過去にしたことを悔い改め、罪深いやり方から離れ、イエスに立ち返るなら、ヤコブのように、キリストの中で新しいアイデンティティを得ることができるのです。

　罪人がキリストが出会ったとき、神は勝利されるのです。過去、現在、未来のすべての罪は、悔い改めてキリストに信仰を置いたときに、清められたと宣言されるのです。

　父なる神よ、今日の御言葉に感謝します。どんなに悲惨な状況でも、どんなに落ちぶれても、あなたは必ず勝ってくださるということを思い出させてくださって、ありがとうございます。

　たとえ希望がないと思うほど落ちぶれても、あなたにはいつも希望があります。あなたは必ず勝つのですから。イスラエルは1000年以上にわたって地上から姿を消しましたが、第二次世界大戦後、イスラエルは再び復活しました。私たちがあなたの御子イエス・キリストに信仰を置いた時、罪と死はなくなりました、なぜならあなたはいつも勝っているからです。

　父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。私たちはあなたを愛しています、お父さん。In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen!!!

Genesis 35 narrates the account where God asks Jacob to once again go up Bethel. If we recall the events of Genesis 28:19, Bethel (House of God) is the name that Jacob gave to Luz. Jacob gave Bethel its name because that is where he got a dream in which God reaffirmed the promise that he made to Abraham and Isaac before him, firmly establishing Jacob in what is known as the “Royal Line,” that includes David and eventually to our Lord Jesus Christ. In Genesis 35, however, the next progression to securing Jacob’s position takes place once again in Bethel. This time, God appeared to Jacob and changed his name to Israel, which in Hebrew means “God Prevails,” (Genesis 35:10). Jacob, which means “the deceiver,” was no longer his identity, but God Prevailed. God prevailed by turning a fraudster who conspired with him mom to steal the birthright and blessings away from his older brother into his vessel. As the name Israel indicates, God Prevails because ultimately, God’s will was done.

Although we do not want to admit it, many of us did terrible things in our lives. In today’s competitive world, many of us, like Jacob, may have used unethical methods to get to where we are. Some of us may have cheated on a test in school. Some of us may have hidden some information that could have given our competition an advantage over us. Some of us may have over-elaborated our qualifications on a job application. Some of us may have outright lied or used other dishonest measures to get to where we are. However, when we placed our faith in Christ, we were given a new identity. Yes, what we did in the past is still wrong. However, if we repent, meaning that we turn away from our sinful way, and turn to Jesus, we will gain new identities in Christ, just like Jacob. When sin met Christ, once again, God Prevailed. All of our sin, past, present, and future, was declared clean when we repented and placed our faith in Christ.

Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. Thank You, for reminding us that no matter how dire the situation is, no matter how much we fall, You will always prevail. Even if we fall to a point where we think there is no hope, there is always hope in You, because You will always prevail. Israel disappeared from the earth for over a thousand years, but after World Ward II, Israel was once more, because You will always prevail. When we placed our faith in Your Son Jesus Christ, sin and death was no more because You always prevail. Thank You, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen!
